i saw this poster in an alley in florence. i am glad santa claus is securing our freedom from capitalism.

i stuck my camera out of my doorway in paris and took this photo. it shows the roof of the courtyard that you would stand in if you wanted to smoke a gauloises. if you want to smoke hashish you should go to the hash hut. i don't know where the hash hut is, but we have one. you could walk through the courtyard if you wanted to go to the titanic, but if you wanted to go to the submarine you would go the other way, up the stairs. next to the submarine is the kitchen, where i make coffee in an orange stovetop coffee pot. we might have a cat. we have cat food.

I was not sure what this sign meant, but it made me nervous about getting on the train from Istanbul back to Belgrade. Perhaps it meant that my train would be canceled in Sofia two days before I was supposed to fly from Serbia back to the USA, and that the conductor who had asked me to smuggle his favorite brand of cigarettes into Bulgaria would refuse to explain why I needed to buy a new ticket or why the train I was scheduled to be on was returning to Turkey, and that some crazy girls from Germany would try to steal my bunk. I finished work in Belgrade a few weeks ago, and flew from there to Madrid. I spent a week with my Chilean friends Sebastian and Pauli: that was nice. I visted the Prado a few times, the Reina Sofia, Toledo and Segovia. Also, Seba and I climbed at La Pedriza for a day, which was really remarkable. I think that we climbed 6 pitches and hiked for 8 hours --- fantastic. I flew from Madrid to Istanbul, where I spent about a week exploring. I mostly stayed in the city, but spent a day in the ancient city of Ephesus, which was very interesting, albeit a bit touristy. I took a train along the old Orient Express route back to Belgrade, but was delayed in Sofia, Bulgaria for a day. I didn't find anything interesting there. I arrived back in Belgrade a day late, and spent less than 24 hours there before flying back to the USA. When I arrived in Boston I hadn't slept in a bed in almost a week-- only buses, trains, and all-nighters. I have spent the last week in Maine, and tried flying back to the West Coast yesterday, but my flight was canceled. So, tomorrow morning I will try again. The pictures above are only of Spain, I will post more later.

Serbia has been caught between Eastern and Western empires for as long as anyone can remember and the current political situation is no different. Some are pushing for Serbia to join the European Union, others believe that a stronger relationships with Russia should be Serbia's focus, especially if the issue of Kosovo's independence is considered. The parliament is reshuffling as I write this, and in the next week or so Serbia's track will likely be set. All of the Serbians I have spoken to, whether they are supporters of the Radical Party or the Democratic Party, agree that 'Косово је Србија' -- Kosovo is Serbia. The main question seems to be, what what ought to be done...

Here you see Steve and Breza in front of Храм светог Саве --the Eastern Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Sava. It has been under construction for over seventy years, and the inside is still unfinished. The main dome is huge and fantastic.
